The phrase fast food was originally part of the title of a trade magazine called Fountain and Fast Food Service. The magazine was renamed Fast Food in 1960. The February issue contained the following statement: ?delicate scallops are really fast food...because they come ready to cook.? And in July of the same year we find this remark, ?Fast food type restaurants do the lion?s share of business for breakfast and noon meals eaten out.?

White Castle is generally recognized as the very first fast food restaurant in America. It made its appearance in 1921. White Castle started out by selling hamburgers for 5 cents. Needless to say it has become very successful, and many competitors followed.

The world?s largest fast food chain is McDonald?s. It first appeared in San Diego, California in 1948. Ray Kroc joined the original McDonald?s founders in 1954 and expanded the franchise. He was originally a distributor of an industrial milkshake mixer that McDonald?s used.

Wendy?s was founded in 1972. It introduced the ?drive-thru? window which is so popular today.

The ?fast? in fast food is there for a reason. It is designed to serve the customer as quickly as possible. In order to do this, fast foods are highly processed (I view this as tampering with natural foods) with standardized ingredients, cooking and production methods.

Fast food franchises? cooking methods are especially suspect in today?s accelerating obesity rates. Items such as french fries and burgers are deep fried in partially hydrogenated oils (also known as trans fats.) When vegetable oils are hardened into margarine or shortening, trans fatty acids are formed.

Trans fats are found in fast food staples such as french fries and fried chicken. But these fats go beyond just fast food restaurants. Processed food manufacturers use trans fats in doughnuts, cookies, crackers, pastries, cereals, and waffles. Trans fats are cheaper than oil, they extend the shelf life of the products, can be used over and over again and they are frequently used to provide flavor and texture.

Trans fatty acids are much more dangerous than the saturated fats they replaced. They have been found to increase the blood levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) while at the same time lowering the levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL cholesterol is the ?bad? cholesterol and HDL is the ?good? cholesterol. Trans fats also clog the arteries, are linked to type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems such as heart disease.

Along with high trans fat products such as french fries and fried chicken, fast food restaurants also serve high sugar content sodas. And now they don?t just serve the small standard sized soda. You can choose the super-sized drinks. One meal from any one of these franchises can provide plenty of empty calories from their high fat and sugary products. You will probably pay more for a Teak patio furniture set than for other types of wooden patio furniture and certainly more than for plastic furniture. However, you are buying quality. It is very satisfying to sit outside on a sunny winter's day enjoying your garden in the knowledge that your neighbours have had to pack their garden furniture away for the season.

The final point to note is that after making that investment in elegant Teak patio furniture you should not spoil the effect by finishing it off with cheap accessories. So do not buy cheap cushions or a flimsy umbrella. Cushions should be thick, about for to six inches, and be made from good quality material that enhances the wood. The umbrella should be made from teak and material that complements the cushions. Get these accessories right and your patio furniture will be aesthetically pleasing to both you and your visitors.

To complete the support of your body there will be a cushion just ahead of the chest cushion for your arms and hands. All of these pads and cushions are held together by a metal structure, usually aluminum, to keep the chair light in weight. Most portable massage chairs are highly adjustable so the massage therapist can adjust it for different ages and sizes of clients. Of course, all portable massage chairs fold up so you can either carry them or put them in a travel case with wheels. Most of them weigh no more than 6 to 7 kilograms so carrying one is rarely a problem.

I'm from New York City. I've been to diners where the staff treats you like they couldn't care less. In NYC, that's called "charm."

So when my wife and I came to Sedona we were looking for a little "charm." We found it at the Sedona Airport Restaurant. Frankly, we would never have known it existed if my cousin and her husband, a pilot, hadn't decided to fly in for the weekend in their little Cessna.

They suggested we have breakfast at the Sedona Airport Restaurant and see them off on their flight back to Maryland. I'm glad we did.

As many Sedona locals know, the Sedona Airport sits perched on an aircraft carrier shaped mesa high above Sedona on Airport Road off of Hwy 89A. They say that the Sedona Airport is "America's Most Scenic Airport," and it's hard to disagree. What's even nicer about it, it's small and only supports general aviation, corporate, and military aircraft, not commercial aircraft...for now.

If you walk to the terminal and go outside, you may be lucky enough to see the Red Baron biplane taking off. At a minimum, you'll see a bunch of cool looking light aircraft parked out on the tarmac. You might even decide to take an airplane ride before your meal.

But, back to the restaurant. Okay, it's a bit of a dive. The windows on the outdoor patio area are lined with plastic, and the staff doesn't always get the order right. The Sedona Oak Creek Airport Authority is currently seeking proposals for the construction and build out of an additional terminal facility for a new restaurant and lounge.

In the meantime Bob and Debbie Calia, whose family has operated the restaurant since 1980, have signed a new lease through August 2009 and have agreed to limited remodeling such as new carpet and paint.

The food is regular diner fare, but the "charm" is in the presentation. For breakfast you can have the Pilot's Choice of corned beef hash, eggs benedict, or "Stealth Bomber Skillets." For lunch how about a "Throttle Bendin' Burger," or a nice NY strip steak for dinner? It's the kind of hardy food you expect from a down-to-earth diner. Because my cousin and her husband were flying out early, a cup of "Liquid Fuel" at breakfast hit the spot.

For a hardy meal, scenic views, and airplane watching, you can't beat the Sedona Airport Restaurant.

Average breakfast/lunch costs between $10-$15 per person, and dinner about $15-$25 per person.

According to a recent Kiplinger survey the average American eats out more than 4 times a week. Preparing and eating more meals at home might be a better choice. But that may be easier said than done! The good news is that eating out needn?t add more inches to your waistline. It is possible to keep your caloric intake under control with a little advance planning.

First of all, lower calorie restaurant food is more readily available. In response to criticism for having mostly high calorie foods, most fast food chains are now offering some healthier lower calorie choices. Fortunately, many family restaurants are beginning to follow this lead.

However, low calorie choices are still limited. And you will likely have days when low cal is just not going to cut it. There are a number of tips to keep in mind when choosing other selections.

Portion size remains one of the biggest problems with most restaurant food in the United States. Many restaurant meals average a staggering 1,000 calories. And that doesn?t include appetizers or dessert!

Some restaurants offer smaller or half-size entrees. But many restaurants do not. This dilemma actually gives you a great opportunity to cut calories drastically. One of the easiest choices you might make is to share an entree with someone else.

2. Consider ordering take out to eat at home. You will still have the advantage of minimal time and fuss. And you have the option to add healthy low calorie fruits and vegetables to fill up on that are so often lacking in fast food meals.

3. Don?t hesitate to ask for modifications. For example, restaurant meals are often made with heavy sauces. Ask for vegetables and main dishes to be served without sauce or sauce on the side.

4. Seek out and be aware of the restaurants that offer lower calorie options that appeal to you. Ask your friends, neighbors, and co-workers for names of restaurants you might try.

5. Avoid buffet meals. It has been well documented that the more choices we are given, the more food we?ll eat.

6. Look for main dishes that have been baked, broiled, roasted, poached, or steamed rather than fried.

7. Start your meal with a soup or salad (remember to order salad dressing on the side). Research studies reveal that people tend to eat fewer total calories for a meal when they fill up first on low calorie foods with high water content.

8. Limit yourself to one piece of bread or ask the server to not bring out the breadbasket at all. When eating in a Mexican restaurant, skip the chips.

9. Choose beverages carefully. Your best bet is to go with water, unsweetened tea or coffee, or diet soda.

If you are having a meal out to celebrate a special occasion you might allow yourself to ease up on your calorie limits (but stop short of pigging out!) Compensate for restaurant meals that exceed your calorie allowance by choosing to eat a LITTLE LESS earlier in the day.

Never go without eating at all because you may very well eat every thing in sight when you get a chance! A better idea would be to go for a walk, bike ride, dance, or whatever you find appealing to work off some of the extra calories after the meal or the next day.

There has been a trend over the past several years to offer alternative dining selections onboard cruise ships, the most popular of these alternatives are the specialty restaurants that are only open for dinner. So, what exactly can you expect in specialty restaurants on cruise ships?

Alternative restaurants all have one thing in common...a cover charge. Usually in the $20 to $30 per person range. Additionally, some have restrictions on children's ages (for example Royal Caribbean has a policy that only children 13 years old and older may dine in the specialty restaurant.) Furthermore, reservations are required and usually there is a requested dress code.

Dining in the specialty restaurants on a cruise ship can often match or even surpass dining in a 4 or even 5 star restaurant; and, for those in the know, the $20 or $30 per person charge is almost always worth the extra money. From the outstanding service to the extraordinary quality of the food, it is a fraction of the cost that an equivalent meal would be in a restaurant on land.

This dining experience should not be rushed and often times the cruise lines will recommend allowing 2 to 3 hours to fully enjoy the atmosphere, the food and the service.

Naysayers often complain that they've already spent enough on their cruise and resent the fact the cruise line is trying to nickel and dime them further for the alternative restaurant experience. Additionally, people try to argue to the fact they can get the same quality food in the main dining room. The truth is - in almost all cases - the alternative restaurants ARE a step or two higher in quality than the main dining room...making it well worth the surcharge. Funny thing is - the people who challenge or put down the alternative restaurant concept are the people have never tried them. To them, I simply say "Don't Knock It Until You've Tried It"!

While this a very personal choice, I do highly recommend trying the specialty restaurant or restaurants (some ships feature more than one alternative restaurant) and then judge for yourself. Chances are you'll wonder why you didn't try it sooner!

While it may seem counterintuitive, some types of flooring and furniture are best cleaned dry using a dry cleaning mop or in combination with a light cleaner such as a dusting spray. Hard wood floors and laminates, for example, can be damaged by too much moisture. In order to keep the finish on these floors in the best condition, a cleaning mop specially designed for this purpose can create the best clean. A dry mop made from 100% cotton, for example, will not scratch the delicate surfaces on polished hard wood floors or specialty laminates. Over time, even the smallest scratches can create a dull appearance.

Dry cleaning mops are designed in such a way as to pick up and retain dust and small particles. As such, they are good for collecting dirt in between deeper cleanings. They also reduce the spread of dust and small dirt particles into the air, which can exacerbate allergies and asthmas. When used in combination with a dusting product, the chances of dust being kicked into the air by the mop are even smaller.

When cleaning a hardwood or laminate floor with a dry mop, begin at the far end of the room and work inward, using a figure eight pattern on the floor. This keeps the dust and particles moving toward you and is much easier on your back as it distributes the effort more evenly through your arms and back. Avoid using the mop to push the dirt and grime away from you as this can create dust flying up. The pulling motion, on the other hand, keeps the mop head in contact with the floor that eliminates dust kicking up. Keep the mop head in contact with the floor as you clean. Even though the cleaning mop is dry, it is a different cleaning motion than a broom.

Avoid the temptation to use your dry mop as a wet mop. These cleaning mops are specifically designed to be used dry, and while they may work as a wet mop, it won't be as effective thereafter as either a wet or dry mop. Additionally, dry cleaning mops do not have a mechanism for squeezing out excess liquid, which is both messy and hard on your hands and back. Besides, many specialty floorings should never be cleaned using a wet mop, such as Pergo and others. If you have specialty flooring in your home, be sure to read the manufacturer's recommendations on the care. Using the right tool for the job is one of the best tricks in effective cleaning and ultimately saves time and money.

When using a cleaning mop designed to be used dry, avoid scrubbing the floor with the mop. For caked on dirt or grime, other cleaning methods should be employed, using products and guidelines specific to your type of flooring. Because the cleaning mop is designed to trap and hold dirt, putting too much pressure on the mop can create scratches on the floor caused by the dirt particles trapped inside the mop.

Depending on the style, the best mop will be designed in such a way that in can be used to reach under low and heavy furniture such as beds or bookcases. This allows you to clean without having to break your back moving heavy furniture. It also eliminates the need to drag out a heavy vacuum to clean a small area. Some cleaning mops have the added benefit of removable heads that can be used as a hand duster, which eliminates the need to purchase specialty dusters or mitts. . The ability to replace the heads also eliminates the need for purchasing a new dry mop when the old one becomes too dirty.

Even with the removable head feature, you can still clean a cleaning mop head prior to replacing it. To avoid scattering dust in the house, take the cleaning mop outside and give it a good shake. Because these mops are designed to retain dust, it may take a bit of effort. If you use the mop with a dusting product, be sure to allow the mop ample time to dry before shaking out the excess dust. Avoid banging the dry mop head on walls, cement, or other outdoor furniture as this can damage the head.

To keep your cleaning mop in the best possible condition, store it upside down or hanging from a wall so that there is no pressure on the mop head. This helps your mop remain the best mop possible for as long as possible.

Chairs - History Part III

In this next article in our continuing history of chairs we're going to pick up with Chinese chairs.

There is not much known about ancient Chinese chairs. What we do know is that during the Tang dynasty, which was from 618 to 907 AD, higher seats started to appear among the Chinese elite and then soon spread to the more common people of China. By the 12th century, sitting on the floor, which at one time was what every Chinese person did, was becoming less common even though in other Asian countries the custom of sitting on the floor continued.

We then move on to the Renaissance period. In Europe especially, it is because of the Renaissance period that the chair became a symbol of authority in the European State. It became custom that the only people who had chairs were those of authority or royalty or those who could simply afford them as they were very expensive. However, once the idea of privilege faded away, the chair became more common in everyone's household.

Once chairs started to be manufactured for common people it was immediately noticeable that the chairs themselves reflected the fashions of the times. Over the course of the Renaissance period chairs have varied in size, shape and sturdiness. They were fashioned not only after women's dress but after men's as well. The chair itself started to become too monstrous with many of the items they were adorned with and soon these items started to disappear in order to make the chair more functional.

By the 18th and 19th centuries the costly adornments of these chairs were threatened by the ordinary adornments of the more common chairs. Because of this came the development of the "conversation chair" which enabled the person sitting in it to sit with his face to the back of the chair. This can actually still be done with many chairs even today. The earlier chairs usually had large arms and it wasn't until the end of the 16th century that the smaller chairs became common.

The majority of chairs in the 17th century were made of oak and were made without upholstery. When it became fashionable to cover them, most of the time leather was used. Sometimes velvet and silk were also used. During later periods, less costly materials were used.

An old Abraham Bosse engraving from around 1630 depicts a Parisian musical party that has pulled their low chairs, which were called backstools, away from the tapestry hung walls where they were usually lined up. The padded back panels were covered with needlework panels. Plain cloth was put across the back to hide the wooden framing. The engraving also depicts stools with column legs.

Leather began to be used only for the most costly and elaborate chairs. These chairs were sheathed in thin plates of silver and were usually sent from Venice to other places all over Europe. To this day, leather is still the most infrequently used material for chairs. Until the 17th century the main characteristic of chairs was to be made sturdy and bulky. After the time of Louis XIII, chairs were made with cane backs and seats and their weight was reduced substantially.

News broke this week that Yahoo has purchased the Inktomi search engine for around US$235 million. This is an interesting development in the search engine industry that may impact greatly on exactly where sites get their traffic from. Another new development in the past few weeks is the change to the HotBot service but first, I'd like to look at the ramifications of the Yahoo/Inktomi deal.

Here's a bit of background information on how the Yahoo and Inktomi search engines work. I'm sure everyone knows Yahoo but not everyone may be completely aware of how their search engine works. Yahoo is a directory. This means that it is a categorised list of sites that are listed by human editors. Getting listed in the Yahoo directory requires a yearly payment for commercial sites. You can get listed for free if you have a non-commercial site but it is very hard to do and can take months. Yahoo provides additional results when you use their search function that come from Google. In the past, Yahoo has used other search engines to provide these results (including Inktomi) but has used Google for the last couple of years.

They initially used results from other search engines to just compliment their own. So, if someone searched for something that wasn't in their directory, they could still get results. The way it worked was that they would provide results from their own directory first and then a user would click on "web pages" to get more results. Strangely, Yahoo actually changed the way this worked during the year so that the results from a search were a mix of listings from their own directory and Google with the Google results being the more prominent of the two. This has essentially made the payment of the US$299 per year for a directory listing an unnecessary expense. Many people still use the directory to browse for sites but, in my experience, more people use the search function.

Inktomi is a full crawler based search engine that provides results for other search engines. They do have a web site but no-one uses it to actually search - it's more of an informational site. Inktomi's results formerly appeared in many search engines but in the last few years, their popularity has declined. The main site that currently uses Inktomi is MSN but Inktomi only provides the fifth level of results. MSN provides sponsored listings from Overture, their own Microsoft sites, their own human edited directory results, LookSmart listings and then Inktomi. So, Inktomi does drive traffic to sites but far less than a search engine like Google.

So, what does all this mean to us? It's hard to say at the moment but there are three options. Either nothing will change (which is unlikely), Yahoo will use Inktomi together with Google on it's site or it will dump Google and use Inktomi for it's search results. Yahoo actually owns part of Google, maybe 5%, so there is a chance that they will keep using their results for this reason. Also, Google provide far better results for searchers than Inktomi so Yahoo would be making a mistake to replace Google. But, apparently Yahoo is annoyed that Google has become competition to them through Google's own site and that Google's news search service is also providing competition.

Without a crystal ball, it's very difficult to know what is going to happen but it's worth making sure that you are prepared for all occurrences. There is really very little that you need to do because it is only the popularity of Inktomi that may change. Even without the searches from Yahoo, Google will still be the biggest search engine in the world due to the fact that it's own site is very popular and it's results are also used by AOL (amongst others). So, what can you do to get the most from Inktomi?

Inktomi is the only major search engine that uses meta tags. This is actually the reason that it is not as popular as before because meta tags allow webmasters to "trick" Inktomi into thinking a page has more relevant content than there really is. Therefore, Inktomi's search results are not very good. However, as there is a good chance that Inktomi will now become popular again, you need to make sure that you have your meta keyword and meta description tags in place. Make sure they are relevant to the page that they are on - you don't want to be caught "spamming" their search engine. The other thing that will probably make a difference is to get other sites to link to you. Link popularity makes a difference on all search engines except possibly AllTheWeb.

I'll keep you updated here with any news on what Yahoo decides to do and any changes that I find out about the way the Inktomi generates results.

As I mentioned above, the other major search engine news in the last month is that HotBot has finally updated their site. HotBot is owned by Lycos and was quite a popular search engine a few years ago. It has become far less popular lately - since it was purchased by Lycos and was just left to "die". It's results largely came from a mix of the ODP, DirectHit and Inktomi. DirectHit has since become Teoma which is owned by AskJeeves but HotBot went for months after DirectHit ceased to exist saying that it's results were coming from them.

So, HotBot has essentially become another meta search engine - like DogPile or Excite. It now works pretty much like Netscape does. A searcher can choose which search engine they would like their results to come from. The search engines that you can choose from are Fast (AllTheWeb), Google, Inktomi and Teoma. This may mean that HotBot starts to get some of it's market share back but as webmasters, there is nothing that we can do to target HotBot. All we can do is target the search engines which provide it's results.

Eating out is one of our nation?s biggest pastimes. It is convenient and gives us the opportunity to enjoy a meal without having to prepare it, serve it or wash the dishes! No matter where you look in your neighborhood, it is a surefire bet that you will find some type of eatery beckoning you to step in and grab a bite!

I decided to look in the yellow pages of my telephone book under ?restaurants? just to scan through the listings. I was literally blown away by the hundreds of restaurants citing their cuisine, contact information, what forms of payment they honor, if they offer specialty dishes (ie. vegetarian), whether they are dine in or take out, hours of operation and in some instances a map on how to get there.

After looking at the top 20 most ?clicked on? restaurant websites in my online city guide, I was not surprised to found that 15 out of 20 were pizzerias and 4 out of 20 were franchises. Amazingly, only 3 out of the 15 listed pizzerias were a franchise. This small survey spoke volumes about the dining preferences of local consumers. People are looking for a dining experience in a relaxed atmosphere. It is apparent that many smaller restaurants cater to the coziness, intimacy and that ?eating experience? many people are hungry for.

Here are 7 key things that most customers look for when selecting some place to dine:

1. Cuisine (ethnic, fast-food, buffet)

2. Prices (affordability)

3. Location (mall, strip center, free standing and easy to find)

4. Atmosphere (cleanliness, casual, sporty, romantic)

5. Ease of parking (Is there ample parking and are the parking spaces easy to get into)

6. Customer Service (how do you serve your patrons; how do you handle complaints; can you accommodate customers with special needs, such as handicap accessibility)

7. Hours of operation

Although many small restaurants do not have the big advertising budgets like some large franchises do, you must be smart with the budget that you have to work with and capitalize on your assets! Identify the strengths and weaknesses of your restaurant, and then incorporate the necessary changes to spotlight your benefits and positive features that a dining patron is looking for. As you can tell from my online search, only ?one fourth? of the top twenty most visited restaurant websites were larger franchises.

I remember the first time I shopped on eBay. I was looking for the absolutely ?Perfect? comforter for my first child. I had found one that was perfect for the room but of course, as anyone who has ever shopped for baby items knows, the price was absolutely outrageous in the department stores.

Once a week my best friend and I enjoy getting together.

Ever since the days of high school my friend Jackie and I were inseparable. We did everything together. We made a pact, before graduating, that no matter what, we would keep in touch.

That was 35 years ago and we still share our lives together.

One of the things we both enjoy doing is eating out.

After spending the entire week with our families cooking and packing lunches every day, eating out with my best friend is something we both look forward to doing.

So we make our plan during the week and settle on a time and place to have a delicious meal at a restaurant. We generally pick a restaurant that we have never been to. We love to do this because it frees us up from family, allows us to chat and gossip, and just enjoy a great meal, without ever having to think about dishes and the clean up.

It was a bright and sunny Sunday.

I picked up my friend at her house and headed out to a restaurant across town. On the way, I had run out of cigarettes and we made a quick stop to make the purchase.

We finally arrived at our destination, relieved to get off the busy highway. The restaurant was located in a wooded area in a rural section of town.

Manning our purses and cigarettes, we were eager to get inside and enjoy our anticipated meal.

"Smoking, or non-smoking?"

This question was posed to us by the eager young, smiling hostess at the charming restaurant we were in..

"Smoking," we both replied, smiling back.

We were then told that as of June 1, smoking was allowed only at the bar, and that we could eat at our table, but would have to smoke at the bar.

As we looked at one another, we asked the hostess to repeat what she had just said, as we became defensive, being in total denial. The hostess repeated, the much rehearsed reply again.

What! As if there is a dividing line in the air for second-hand smoke?

Hopping up on a bar stool to have a cigarette was out of the question. Not with my bad back! I had trouble getting on my pantyhose this morning, not to mention, getting out of our parked car.

The issue of clean air is bordering on the ridiculous!

Clean air just does not exist, not even in a smoke-free environment. The list of pollutants is long.

When you think about it, possibly the most important source of air pollution and floating carcinogens in restaurants is cooking. Cooking fat, as it decomposes, releases gases into the air that lodge in our lungs.

Other dangers that lurk in restaurant air are candles, romantically burning on the tables, while patrons breathe airborne soot particles.

What did we want to do, the hostess asked?

The decision was simple. "Leave," we replied, as we both walked out into the "clean air."

Total employment in the American furniture industry (household and office segments) stood at 557,000 persons in 2006. Employment in all of manufacturing totaled 14.2 million persons. Thus, the furniture industry accounts for only 3.9% of the manufacturing total, and only 0.4% of the 137 million people in total with jobs in the United States in 2006.

During the past two decades and up to the beginning of this century, furniture employment has been on the rise, a claim that cannot be made by manufacturers in general. However, starting in 2001, furniture employment entered a declining phase. Between 1996 and 2006, the level of furniture industry employment fell by 7.7% while total manufacturing employment fell by 17.6%. The reason for this phenomenon lies in the fact that the furniture industry lends itself less to labor-saving technologies than other industries.

Kitchen cabinet, household and institutional furniture manufacturers employed 66.2% of the people in the overall furniture and fixtures industry. The remaining 33.8%, are employed by office and other furniture manufacturers. Though it still commands the greater share today, kitchen cabinet, household and institutional furniture manufacturers witnessed a gradual erosion in their share of total furniture and fixtures industry employment over the last two decades.

The non-production worker share varies widely across the various furniture segments. The non-production share is generally higher within the office group (28%) compared to the household group (21%). Since office furniture is frequently distributed directly by the manufacturers, more marketing and design staff must be retained by office furniture manufacturers.

Production worker employment in the manufacture of furniture and fixtures has declined more rapidly than that of non-production workers. In 1996 salaried and commissioned workers accounted for only 20.9% of total employment in this industry but that share gradually increased to exceed 22.4% at the present time. The long-term increase in the share of non-production employees reflects both the introduction of labor-saving technology (which has reduced the relative need for production workers) and the increasingly complex business environment (which requires more marketing and administrative workers to move furniture products from the plant to the final consumer).
