It was started over forty years ago by the Veteran?s Association as a rehabilitation program, and over the years has grown in leaps and bounds. Today wheelchair basketball is a professional sport that offers more than 180 teams across the United States. Different versions of wheelchair basketball have spawned off of wheelchair basketball, and are very fun to play. Some even have lower, netted basketball rims that return the ball back to the players without having to chase it down.

In order to play wheelchair basketball, it is essential to have a lightweight wheelchair. Several sports wheelchairs are on the market today just for sports enthusiasts. And if you are an amputee, several prosthetic devices have been created to enjoy the sport even more. The most common upper body prosthetic ? the Super Sport, which is manufactured by TRS, Inc. ? comes in different sizes and was specifically designed for playing various sports including ball sports.

The Special Olympics added Boccia ball to its itinerary years ago, and it is game that can be enjoyed by all wheelchair users. You can play it either indoors or outdoors, and set up is a breeze. You need a target ball and six balls for each player. All you have to do is try and get your ball closest to the target ball thrown at the beginning of the game. Points are awarded based on the proximity of balls to that of the target ball.

Another wheelchair sport, quad rugby, was specifically designed for quadriplegics unable to play wheelchair basketball. It is a mixture of wheelchair basketball and ice hockey. In 1988 quad rugby players officially started the United States Quad Rugby Association, and has over 40 teams on its membership roster.

To play the game you must have two teams of four players each. Each player is classified based on impairment - .5 being the greatest impairment and 3.5 being the least impairment, and teams cannot not exceed an 8.

The players then have four 8-minute quarters in which the offense must carry the ball to their goal (on the other team?s side of the court). The defense is constantly trying to prevent the other team from scoring. The team who reaches the other person?s goal line most frequently wins.

Power soccer is another fun wheelchair sport that can rev the sport enthusiast?s engine. Players in power soccer must have an electric wheelchair.

Two teams have two 30-minute halves to push the soccer ball over the other team?s goal line. The team to reach the other person?s goal most frequently wins.

So, just because you are in a wheelchair doesn?t mean that you cannot enjoy sports activities. And based on the sport you choose to participate in, there are several wheelchair sports accessories available for you, including belts and harnesses, gloves, bags for carrying items, drink holders and specialty back supports.

Chairs - History Part V

In this next article in our series on the history of chairs we're going to look at chairs of the 18th century.

With the coming of the 18th century, chairs started to become more informal and started to replace the bolt upright look of the courts and the aristocracy that was common during the time of Louis XIV. Around 1720 the commodious seat was developed in Paris, France. The new Rocco chairs were comfortably upholstered on removable frames secured by clips so that changes to the chair could be made to accommodate both winter and summer temperature and humidity conditions. These early Louis XV chairs were upholstered a la reine, with the back in a flat panel that was placed squared to the wall. This way the top rails curves complimented those of the panels behind them.

French fashion in chairs came from Paris as did everything else of the times. From the late 1720s, Louis XV French chairs were made without stretchers because they interfered with the unified flow of curved seatrails into cabriole legs. These usually ended in scrolled feet. This style was strictly enforced until the revolution when they were made mostly by a menuisier in association with the person who made the upholstery who was the huissier. These people specialized in furniture making in Paris. Specialized seats were developed and given some pretty fancy names. The most popular of these was the bergere or "shepherdess". The woods used to make most of these chairs were walnut and beech. The finishes of the chairs were made in very light tones. The days of the dark finishes were coming to an end. In some cases, the chairs were left in their natural color and were unfinished. Most of the unfinished chairs were made from walnut because it looked better unfinished than beech. In some provinces fruitwoods became very popular for chair making. These were considered variations on the traditional French models. These variations were produced mostly by Bordeaux and Liege between 1725 and 1780.

In the late 1760s the first, what are called, neoclassical chairs were manufactured in Paris. These were made even before the ascension of Louis XVI whose name is actually associated with these models. The legs of these chairs were straight tapered fluted. They were joined by a block at the seat rail. They also had architectural moldings. The leading chair makers of this style during the 1770s and 1780s were Louis Delanois, Jean-Claude Sene and Georges Jacob.

The 18th century is considered the golden age of the chair. This was especially true in France and England where there were many different ideas for chair making going around. Diderot wrote extensively about these chairs in his encyclopaedia. One of the most famous chairs of the period was the Louis Seize chair which had an oval back and a very ample seat. It also had descending arms and round-reeded legs. It was upholstered in Beauvais and woven in Boucher or Watteau-like scenes.

A United States research, published in Dec 2006?s issue of Pediatrics, suggested that having fast-food restaurants in children?s hospitals may encourage young patients? families to eat fast food and to think that it is relatively healthy.

Parents of children who received outpatient treatment at Children?s Memorial were much more likely to buy McDonald?s food on the day their youngsters were treated than parents of children treated at Chicago-area hospitals without McDonald?s.

Parents of children treated at Children?s Memorial also were twice as likely to rate McDonald?s food as a relatively healthy choice than those whose children were treated elsewhere.

In view of the prevailing concerns about the childhood obesity, this may be a troubling phenomenon. About 17 percent of US children are considered as obese. Heavy consumption of calorie-laden, fatty fast food is quoted as one of the possible causes.

Obesity is a risk factor for health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke, high blood cholesterol, etc., which will ultimately lead to development of heart disease.

Data collected showed that at least 59 of the United States? 250 children?s hospitals have fast-food restaurants. This may give 2 different messages: as health-care profession promoting health and saying obesity is a huge medical problem?, and then implicitly encouraging it.

The researchers surveyed 386 parents and other adults leaving 3 Chicago-area hospitals after their children had outpatient visits. They are Children?s Memorial; Ronald McDonald Children?s Hospital in Maywood, which use McDonald?s branding but has no McDonald?s restaurant; and the University of Chicago?s children hospital, which has no McDonald?s restaurant or branding on site.

The study found that 56 percent of participants at Children?s Memorial had fast food on the survey day, compared with 29 percent at Ronald McDonald Children?s Hospital and 33 percent at the University of Chicago Hospital. Most of those at all 3 hospitals who had fast food that day chose McDonald?s.

Nevertheless, some health professionals do feel that occasional use of fast food to treat sick children going through difficult treatment is not really a big issue. If one chooses wisely, fast food needs not be an unhealthy choice, according to a dietitian.

As what a dietitian suggests, one should keep portion sizes small and limit eating hamburgers to only once a week. A hamburger and orange juice give 350 kcal and 10g of fat, of which 3g is made up of saturated fat.

2 years ago, doctors at Cleveland Clinic, known for heart disease research tried to remove McDonald?s from the hospital. Thought the restaurant is still there, it began offering healthy alternatives to Big Macs and French fries after discussion with clinic officials.

It is more important for doctors and nurses to continue to talk to parents about what constitutes a healthy diet for kids, and to teach the kids to choose healthier options when eating out.

You CAN Have Your Cats and Your Furniture Too

No one wants to invest hundreds or even thousands of dollars in furnishings only to see them ripped to shreds by an overzealous pet, however beloved. To many people the obvious answer is to have their cats declawed, but it this really a reasonable alternative?

Its proponents depict it as a simple and painless operation, but it is neither simple or painless. Most people aren't aware that it's not just the claws that are removed. Declawing involves the amputation of the first joint of each toe, and as any amputee can tell you, the pain persists for months if not years. The only difference is your cat can't tell you it still hurts.

This doesn't mean you have to put up with shredded furniture and drapes, or snagged carpets. I have four cats of my own, none of then declawed, and my upholstery and curtains are intact and my rugs unsnagged. There are a number of steps you can take to minimize or eliminate the damage.

1. Give them what they want.

Scratching is not just a means of sharpening claws, it's a vital form of exercise that tones and strengthens the muscles. Even declawed cats go through the motions. It's instinctive. Birds gotta swim, fish gotta fly, cats gotta scratch. Whatever. So give them something suitable to scratch on, preferably not one of those pint-sized carpet-covered pet department abominations. That only confuses them.

If that's what you already have, at least pull off the carpeting and wrap it with good quality jute or sisal rope, half-inch in diameter, wound tightly and secured with glue. If you sew, you might try making a slip cover you can easily remove and replace as necessary. Burlap is good for this, but almost any fabric with a heavy weave or a textured surface will work. My own cats are partial to upholstery velvet and corduroy. Ideally the post should be at least two inches higher than the cat can reach.

Many cats prefer a horizontal surface to scratch on, and take well to a commercial scratching pad made from corrugated cardboard.

Whatever you decide to use, spray it lightly with catnip extract (not synthetic - they WILL know the difference) and place it near your cat's favorite scratching spot. Once he or she becomes accustomed to the new surface, gradually move it to a more convenient location. These materials tend to be messy, so choose a spot where you can easily sweep or vacuum around it.

2. Use your good judgement when choosing fabrics and rugs.

Pass up all those lovely but delicate satin and damask weaves or the aforementioned textured surfaces. These are cat magnets. Knits and other stretchy fabrics are an open invitation to snags. Leather and faux leathers are also major no-no's. Sheer panels at the windows? Forget it!

Look for strong fabrics with a tight weave such as sailcloth or canvas. Most denims hold up well, also. For curtains, go with something like percale or chintz. Most of the curtains at my house are made from bedsheets, and are not only attractive but virtually indestructible. For carpeting, a medium or low plush is preferable to a berber or a sculptured pile. Remember, minimum texture is the key.

As long as we're on the subject, think brown. That way when your cat upchucks on it, and it will, it won't be such a disaster. If your cat is still drawn to the furniture, a number of companies sell clear plastic corner protectors that self-adhere to most fabrics.

3. Trim the claws.

It's not as difficult as it might seem, especially if you start them as kittens. Use a specifically designed animal nail trimmer and start out slow. Begin by just handling the paws, and practice extending the claws without trying to trim. The cat will become accustomed to being handled and will be less likely to react violently to the actual trimming. After a few days of this, try trimming, just one or two nails at a time, and only take off the very tips. If you still find it troublesome, most professional groomers will do it for a minimal fee.

4. Claw caps.

These are soft plastic covers that are glued onto the claws and last for up to 4-6 weeks. I've never tried them myself, but many people report good results.

Cats and people have shared living quarters for thousand of years, and with a little forethought and cooperation we should be able to maintain a harmonious relationship between ourselves, our pets, and our furniture.

We made the habit of using commercial artists that were just starting out and willing to work for reasonable items. We would offer to name a line of products using their name and that had some good selling appeal. Who would not like having their own furniture line? (it reminds me of giving a person a title instead of a raise, but it does work)

Another technique that works well is outsourcing your parts after you develop a good feel for what is selling. There is nothing wrong with importing chairs or blank parts to help cut down your production time. Submit your own designs and many importers will build to your exact specifications. Finishing the product yourself using this technique can still be labeled with the handmade label. This is a powerful technique but you have to order parts in larger quantities to make it work best.

If you are thinking about setting out to specialize in this field, it can be very rewarding. Knowing the obstacles before you get into is, can make the difference between staying in the market or moving on to something else.

Once a week my best friend and I enjoy getting together.

Ever since the days of high school my friend Jackie and I were inseparable. We did everything together. We made a pact, before graduating, that no matter what, we would keep in touch.

That was 35 years ago and we still share our lives together.

We love to do this because it frees us up from family, allows us to chat and gossip, and just enjoy a great meal, without ever having to think about dishes and the clean up.

I picked up my friend at her house and headed out to a restaurant across town. On the way, I had run out of cigarettes and we made a quick stop to make the purchase.

We finally arrived at our destination, relieved to get off the busy highway. The restaurant was located in a wooded area in a rural section of town.

Manning our purses and cigarettes, we were eager to get inside and enjoy our anticipated meal.

"Smoking, or non-smoking?"

This question was posed to us by the eager young, smiling hostess at the charming restaurant we were in..

"Smoking," we both replied, smiling back.

We were then told that as of June 1, smoking was allowed only at the bar, and that we could eat at our table, but would have to smoke at the bar.

As we looked at one another, we asked the hostess to repeat what she had just said, as we became defensive, being in total denial. The hostess repeated, the much rehearsed reply again.

What! As if there is a dividing line in the air for second-hand smoke?

Hopping up on a bar stool to have a cigarette was out of the question. Not with my bad back! I had trouble getting on my pantyhose this morning, not to mention, getting out of our parked car.

The issue of clean air is bordering on the ridiculous!

The Columbia Restaurant and Cigar Factory

The Columbia Restaurant is the nation's largest Spanish restaurant and Florida's oldest at 100 years old. Started in 1905 by Cuban immigrant Casimiro Hernandez in the burgeoning cigar capitol of Ybor City Tampa, they now have 7 locations in Florida as well as their own cigar factory and store, where they make the "Gonzalez y Martinez" brand of cigars.

I was on the West coast of Florida recently and decided to visit two of The Columbia's locations. On my way driving up the coast, I stopped in at the Sarasota location on St. Armand's Circle and then drove an hour North to the original location in Tampa's Ybor City. I have been to both locations to eat, drink and smoke several times throughout the years. The Columbia remains one of my favorite places. I even have their cookbook.

In Sarasota, John Monetti, the General Manager was very gracious in granting me his time as my visit was impromptu and they were right in the middle of preparations to open for the day's business. We picked out a couple of Gonzalez y Martinez cigars from the humidor and browsed the gift shop.

In the gift shop, they sell the Columbia Restaurant Spanish Cookbook, which not only has 178 recipes, but the history of The Columbia as well. I've had the book for several years and frequently use the recipes to recreate my favorite menu items.

They still serve some of the original dishes from 1905, such as; Spanish Bean Soup, (which combines sausage, garbanzo beans, and potatoes in beef stock); Arroz con Pollo, (the classic chicken and rice dish); an authentic Cuban Sandwich; and the 1905 Salad, dressed with the family's special blend of fresh garlic, oregano, wine vinegar, lemon juice, and Spanish olive oil.

Two of my favorite dishes that I frequently make at home are; Lobster Columbia, which combines onion, green peppers, garlic, tomato, chopped ham, sliced mushrooms, lobster and shrimp; and Picadillo (Cuban Beef Hash) which includes ground beef, onions, garlic, green peppers, olives and raisins among other ingredients.

In Sarasota, there is ample outdoor sidewalk seating, which is great for people watching. Or, if you'd like some eye-candy while you sit at the bar, bartender Stella is one of the best reasons to get drunk during the day.

The Columbia is also the place where I had my first "Cuban Manhattan". This one got left out of the book somehow, but it's easy to make. It's just like a regular Manhattan, except you substitute rum for the bourbon.

Next stop - The original Columbia Restaurant to check out the cigar factory and store. John paved the way for me with a phone call to the store manager, Meylin Garcia, who gave me a hearty welcome with a big smile. (Everybody is super-nice at both locations I visited.)

Meylin was kind enough to demonstrate how the in-store rollers make the cigars. There is usually a cigar roller there Monday - Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. I think Meylin is cuter than the regular cigar roller though.

As I write this, I am smoking the Gonzalez y Martinez Torpedo Maduro accompanied by a Starbucks Frappuccino. It's an excellent combination of a sweet drink with a full-bodied cigar that burns perfectly with a nice white ash. This shows that the cigar was well-rolled with quality tobacco. The wrapper is nice and dark, and the cigar is dressed with a handsome red, black and gold band.

The Gonzalez y Martinez brand made by The Columbia offers six different sizes, both in natural and maduro for 12 cigars to choose from including; Churchill, Corona, Robusto, Perfecto #1, Perfecto #2 and Torpedo. They can be purchased in Bundles of 25, Boxes of 10, a sampler pack of 4, gift box of 3, or in singles.

The Columbia is one of Florida's finest treasures and a must-experience for Spanish food lovers and cigar smokers. Different locations offer flamenco dance performances, cigar bar caf?, live jazz, tapas, spirits and cigars.

Lots of times, people get choosy when they are buying a new computer, a cell phone, a refrigerator, or a flat screen TV. They try to learn everything they could about the item by reading product reviews in magazines and on the Internet; they ask friends who have tried it, and even go out to comparison shop. I don?t understand this. People should be giving even more effort and time into furniture shopping that they do with TVs and mobile phones and digital cameras. Quality furniture usually costs more than household appliances, after all, and they last longer too. A good dining table, for instance, will last for years with proper use and care, while your digital camera will probably become obsolete six months after you bought it. Measure everything before you start buying; the room or area it?s going to be put in, and the piece itself.

This brings us to doors and elevators. Sometimes it still boggles my mind how many people forget to take into account the size of the furniture they?re buying and the actual size of the doors, windows, and the elevator they?re going to have to go through when they get home. Lots of stories abound about people who buy a sofa, and then arrive home only to discover that he couldn?t even get it through his front door or fit it into the elevator. Again, I have to stress this major point: Measure everything before buying.

Never buy on impulse. Oh sure, it?s tough resisting the itch to go in and buy that grandfather clock at a 50% discount. But think twice before you do. Do you really need it? You may think that you just saved $200 on that purchase, but if it doesn?t match with the colors, scale, and style of your room, that?s $200 you?ve just wasted. This is a common habit of people that?s being taken advantage of by shops and stores everywhere.

Don?t bother mentally processing the infinite pairings possible with food and wine, in any consideration of the world?s best. I must also leave out my personal childhood favorite of Tom?s Peanut Butter Crackers and Coca Cola (a treat I still indulge on road trips). There is no doubt that a well made Sazerac cocktail with freshly opened oysters stands astride the epicurean world like The Colossus of Rhodes as the best possible combination of food and drink.

A complete history of the Sazerac Cocktail written by Chuck Taggart is worth the read. I have confirmed the history from several other sources: the sum of which research leads me to the conclusion that the Sazerac is the oldest cocktail in America. In the early1800?s Antoine Amadie Peychaud, a New Orleans apothecary, made a drink using his medicinal Peychaud Bitters in a cognac and Absinthe drink called a ?coquertier.? This French word was Americanized to ?Cocktail.?

Mr. Taylor, owner of the Sazerac Coffeehouse, bestowed the name ?Sazerac? in 1853 by announcing the drink to hence forth be made solely from the Cognac brand, Sazerac-du-Forge et Fills. The Sazerac Coffeehouse changed owners in 1870 and with it, the basic Sazerac ingredient, Cognac, to American Rye Whiskey ? for reasons of availability and cost.

My personal introduction to the Sazerac was not as a libation, but in a story told to me by Marcelle Bienvenue, author of the cookbook Who?s Your Mama, Are You Catholic & Can You Make a Roux,? wherein she once reluctantly shared her Sazerac and oysters with Tennessee Williams in New Orleans? Acme Oyster Bar. The story so filled me with wonder, that I launched solo into the New Orleans night determined to find the best Sazerac in the Cresant City.

This ?hands on? research project lasted well into the following morning. About all I can meaningfully report is that I survived ? with an unrequited appetite for Sazeracs and fresh oysters.

I need some disclaimers here as regards ?well made? Sazeracs. If you?re trying for the ?World?s Best,? wait until you have the right ingredients. Everyone knows the original Absinth made with wormwood, a substance then determined to be deleterious to your health, was banned in the USA. That concept now is being challenged, and you can scout the Internet and again find Absinth available. I have not tried this as a substitute for Pernod. The New Orleans liqueur, Herbsaint, is used almost exclusively in its hometown, but I still prefer Pernod. You could substitute Canadian Rye, Bourbon or Cognac for American Rye, but I wouldn?t. Last but not least, there is always Angostura Bitters for the Peychaud Bitters, but why?

The World?s Best Pairing of Food and Drink
Ingredients:
2 ? 3 ? ounce Old Fashion Cocktail Glasses
5 ? drops Pernod
1 ? Sugar cube (Ok, Ok ? you could substitute a teaspoon of sugar or bar syrup)
2 ? Drops Peychaud Bitters
1 ? to 2 ? Ounces of Old Overholt American Rye Whiskey (Come on! Go out and buy a bottle)
Finely crushed ice
1 ? Large lemon twist (Make sure it?s big enough to drip a little lemon oil)
12 ? Each ultra fresh Blue Point oysters
Preparation:
Sazerac:
Fill glass No. 1 with ice to cool
Place two drops of Peychaud Bitters on the sugar cube and drop into glass No.2
Add Old Overholt whiskey and mull the sugar cube until it is completely crushed
Add ice and stir or shake until the sugar is totally dissolved.
Remove the ice from glass No.1 and dry.
Add 5 drops of Pernod to Glass No 1, rolling it around until all surfaces are covered.
Fling the excess Pernod out with a snap of the wrist (It?s all in the wrist action)
Strain glass No. 2 into glass No.1
Twist lemon peel until oil drops, then ad as garnish.
Oysters
Open, cut loose from shell, and display on bed of ice.

Go to Heaven! The warmth of the Sazerac has layers of complexity including spice honey and anise with the aroma of lemon oil. A balance of sweetness and pungency that combines with the oysters in a manner that makes you yearn for solitude where you can moan with pleasure without someone saying, ?I want what she?s having.?

Nordic Europe has always produced very distinct themes. When it comes to Scandinavian theme furniture, there is much more to the look than Ikea.

Scandinavian theme furniture is also known as Danish Theme or Scandinavian Modern. The theme was experimented with in the years before World War II to some degree, but it was the War itself that really gave it birth. The war crippled the manufacturing facilities in the Scandinavian countries, and created massive material shortages. Furniture makers were forced to look to the craftsman of the past, and to the local materials like oak, clay, and linen that were available. They also had been heavily influenced by the war in other ways. They were tired of fear and despair, and wanted to find a way to express their optimism for the future in a way that anticipated it while keeping just a hint of respect for the past.

The result was a new theme of furniture that featured clean lines. It was sharp and without a lot of frills. The pieces were often designed to save space. They were smaller, and often folded up with a touch of the finger or were easily stacked. They had a distinctly futuristic look. Table tops seemed to be floating above their frames as if unattached. This was, of course, Scandinavian theme furniture.

Edgar Kauffman Jr. was on the staff of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. He was the son of the owner of an estate in Pennsylvania called "Fallingwater." It had been designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and was built around a waterfall. Kauffman had a lot of influence in the design community in New York, and he fell in love with the new Scandinavian look. He decorated Fallingwater with select pieces of the theme, and this action brought instant fame and attention in the United States furniture community to Scandinavian theme furniture.

In the 1950's, the theme spread across the United States. It was popular with the young and mobile new generation of Americans who were also tired of the war years, and looking toward the future. Their homes were smaller, and they tended to move more frequently. The attention to smaller size made the pieces perfect fits. They were also easy to clean and maintain. Their light weight made them painless to move. As American firms began to experiment with them, they were influenced a bit by the Jetsons Cartoons, and Scandinavian pieces were made even more futuristic. In doing so, the natural materials of the originals were replaced by materials the Scandinavians would never have dreamed of using for furniture. It was the time of the plastic square table, and the austere shelving units often associated with the theme.

Trends change, and the prosperity of the 1980's and 1990's led to a revival of interest in the more stylistic and refined lines and shapes of the past. Often Scandinavian theme furniture seemed more like "Mom's furniture" as a new generation sought their own expression. The theme declined even in the Scandinavian countries where people began to have a nostalgic feeling for the pre-war themes.

Today, some large retailers sell lines of Scandinavian theme furniture, at least the Americanized version. Older originals are still found in yard sales and flea markets. Strangely, much of it does not make us look hopefully into the future as much as it reminds us of how Mom's place used to look when we were kids. Ah, the passing of generations.

Chairs - History Part III

In this next article in our continuing history of chairs we're going to pick up with Chinese chairs.

There is not much known about ancient Chinese chairs. What we do know is that during the Tang dynasty, which was from 618 to 907 AD, higher seats started to appear among the Chinese elite and then soon spread to the more common people of China. By the 12th century, sitting on the floor, which at one time was what every Chinese person did, was becoming less common even though in other Asian countries the custom of sitting on the floor continued.

We then move on to the Renaissance period. In Europe especially, it is because of the Renaissance period that the chair became a symbol of authority in the European State. It became custom that the only people who had chairs were those of authority or royalty or those who could simply afford them as they were very expensive. However, once the idea of privilege faded away, the chair became more common in everyone's household.

Once chairs started to be manufactured for common people it was immediately noticeable that the chairs themselves reflected the fashions of the times. Over the course of the Renaissance period chairs have varied in size, shape and sturdiness. They were fashioned not only after women's dress but after men's as well. The chair itself started to become too monstrous with many of the items they were adorned with and soon these items started to disappear in order to make the chair more functional.

By the 18th and 19th centuries the costly adornments of these chairs were threatened by the ordinary adornments of the more common chairs. Because of this came the development of the "conversation chair" which enabled the person sitting in it to sit with his face to the back of the chair. This can actually still be done with many chairs even today. The earlier chairs usually had large arms and it wasn't until the end of the 16th century that the smaller chairs became common.

The majority of chairs in the 17th century were made of oak and were made without upholstery. When it became fashionable to cover them, most of the time leather was used. Sometimes velvet and silk were also used. During later periods, less costly materials were used.

An old Abraham Bosse engraving from around 1630 depicts a Parisian musical party that has pulled their low chairs, which were called backstools, away from the tapestry hung walls where they were usually lined up. The padded back panels were covered with needlework panels. Plain cloth was put across the back to hide the wooden framing. The engraving also depicts stools with column legs.

Leather began to be used only for the most costly and elaborate chairs. These chairs were sheathed in thin plates of silver and were usually sent from Venice to other places all over Europe. To this day, leather is still the most infrequently used material for chairs. Until the 17th century the main characteristic of chairs was to be made sturdy and bulky. After the time of Louis XIII, chairs were made with cane backs and seats and their weight was reduced substantially.
